The first National Art Honor Society Meeting for the 2009-2010 School Year was held last week on September 15. Those present include President Dorothy Dickinson, Chair of Activities Morgan Wilson, Morgan Early, Amanda Bolduc, Tiffany Ayotte, Amanda Almquist, and Marion Raymond. Those who could not attend were Vice President Stephanie Ayotte, Historian Jaclyn Goddette, Danielle MacConnell, Ryan Loring, Charlotte Griffiths, Crystal Carter, and Matt Mooshian. The meeting began at 2:30 after school. From now on, meeting will be Mondays after school in the art room. The cost for joining NAHS is $3.00, unless the student needs a scholarship.

The National Art Honor Society met yesterday on August 17th. Attendants include Jaclyn Goddette, Danielle MacConnell, and two former students of Newport Middle High School. Much progress has been made, and we expect the pond mural to be finished in our next several meetings! The meeting lasted from 11 a.m. to 1:30.

 The National Art Honor Society met today on July 22. Attendants include Morgan Wilson, Danielle MacConnell, Nikki Hanson, Marion Raymond, and Jaclyn Goddette. Some progress has been made; several fish have been finished and a turtle was completed. The meeting lasted up to 2-2:30 p.m. The site has also been updated with the first Artist of the Week, so be sure to check that out! The NAHS Flick has also been updated with today's pictures. The NMHS/NAHS Chapter is working on designing a pond mural in a medieval court yard created by Mrs. Leiva and her language arts students in conjunction with the Horticulture students of Ms. Steven’s. The concrete slab where the pond mural will be painted was sealed with a clear coating at the end of the school year by Danielle Mac Connell, Amanda Bolduc and Jacob Stone. The pond mural is being created on top of several manhole covers disguised as turtles and Lilly pads with coy fish swimming underneath. The designs were produced by the students and painted during the summer months.
In July, students launched a miniature journal round robin exchange. Each student will keep the 2”x3” journal for one week during the summer months, create artwork on several pages then pass it on to the next artist until all ten members have had a chance to add artwork the journal which will then be on display in the schools’ media center.
The NMHS/ NAHS Chapter has been approached to create a concrete sculpture for a Zen garden at the entrance to the school. They are also planning to create mascot -Tiger paw print - stepping stones for several areas around the school. These will be engraved with a name when purchased for a fee and act as a fundraiser for future society events and field trips.

The Newport Middle High School chapter of The National Art Honor Society was created by the National Art Education Association in 1978. It was created specifically to inspire and recognize high school students who have shown an outstanding ability in art. The NAHS News is received by all student chapter members and their sponsor twice a year. The NAHS News contains chapter activities, art history, student drawings, art careers, photographs, scholarships and general information.
Selection for membership requires that students have a minimum of one semester in art and maintain a B average in art. Our chapter strives to be inclusive rather than exclusive by allowing serious music majors with a B average or above who don’t have time in their schedule to take a semester of art to join the NAHS. We hope to provide them with the visual art experience they desire.
The chapter’s advisor is Ms. Skinner-Perez. She exhibits in NH on a regular basis, has a commission piece at the NH State Archives building and is the current president of the Women’s Caucus for Art/NH Chapter. She taught in various schools in New York and New Hampshire over the past 25 years and has just completed her first year at NMHS. She has her BS in Art Education from Daemen College, NY.

Dorothy Dickinson- Dorothy Dickinson is President of the National Art Honor Society and is going into 11th grade. Dorothy enjoys Chagall and Oranges. As president, some of her responsibilities include organizing meetings and informing others of NAHS events.
Stephanie Ayotte- Stephanie Ayotte is Vice President of the National Art Honor Society and is going into 10th grade. Stephanie enjoys Leonardo da Vinci. As Vice President, her responsibility is to assist the President.
Morgan Wilson- Morgan Wilson is the National Art Honor Society’s Chair of Activities and is going into 10th grade. Morgan Wilson enjoys Monet’s artwork. As the Chair of Activities, some of her responsibilities include organizing the National Art Honor Society activities and events.
Jaclyn Goddette- Jaclyn Goddette is the National Art Honor Society’s Historian and is going into 10th grade. Jaclyn enjoys Monet and reading. As the Historian, her responsibility is to document current NAHS projects.

Mural Proposal-The National Art Honor Society will be composing a proposal to present to the School Board for bringing back school murals. The first task to putting together the proposal is discovering why the previous murals have been painted over. The two possibilities NAHS has postulated is that either the school murals are a fire hazard, or that there are regulations that maintain the school’s walls must be repainted regularly. If it is a fire hazard, NAHS will meet with Dr. Brannigan and the fire marshal. On the other hand, if the walls need to be repainted often, NAHS could simply stretch out a material such as canvas, metal, or a type of board and hang it up so murals will still be allowed.
Field Trip to H20:Film on Water-The H20: Film on Water is a contemporary art exhibition by the Great River Arts Institute. The juried artists will accompany a selection of artists working in diverse media, and all will be shown concurrently at four venues along the Connecticut River Valley and its watershed. Thursday, October 1st has been decided upon for the NAHS field trip. If parents or other teachers can not be requested to help transport students, members can walk to the exhibit.
Induction Ceremony-The Induction Ceremony will be held October 19th. The ceremony will take place in Mrs. Leiva’s court yard at 5:30, by the pond mural, wether permiting.The Induction Ceremony will be held October 19th.
